The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) announces the start of application submission for participation in the Pilot Program of Special-Purpose Funding for Research Teams Acting within the NICA Megascience Project in 2022 (hereinafter — the Programme).

Purpose of the Programme:

The Programme is aimed at enhancing the activity of teams from research and educational organizations of JINR Member States, which have concluded Memorandums of Understanding (hereinafter — MoU) on participation in the MPD, BM@N or SPD collaborations as well as of teams having agreements on construction and development of the NICA accelerator complex, in the activity of these collaborations and in the development of NICA as a whole.

Management of the Programme:

Decision on the fund distribution is made by the Committee for Consideration of Applications for Funding under the Program (hereinafter — the Committee). The Committee includes representatives of the JINR Directorate, co-leaders of the NICA Project, the head of the accelerator department and leaders of the MPD, BM@N and SPD collaborations. The composition of the Committee is approved by the order of the JINR Director. The Committee may also request peer reviews by independent experts.

The following are eligible to participate in the Programme:

Research teams from scientific and educational organizations of the JINR Member States, which have an MoU with JINR on participation in MPD, BM@N or SPD collaborations, as well as agreements on cooperation within accelerator-related topics, with no other financial resources available to support joint activities. From each organization, only one research team can receive financial support, the leader of which must also be a member of one of the mentioned collaborations until the date of application submission.


The financial resources of the Programme can be used to provide, in full or in part, the contribution of research teams to the common funds of the MPD, BM@N or SPD collaborations, to support the activity of undergraduate and graduate students, to reimburse the cost of travel (travel and accommodation) of members of teams to JINR in order to implement the work or participation in BM@N, MPD or SPD shifts and to maintain equipment and setups of the NICA complex, including accelerator instrumentation. Settlements with the fund holders are made by the JINR Accounting Department in accordance with the rules and procedures in force at JINR.

Required information to apply for funding:

The application should be addressed to the Chairman of the Committee in accordance with the established application forms and is sent to the following e-mail: The application must contain the following information:

  • description of research project be implemented within the collaboration or description of team-specific work on the accelerator complex development;
  • list of members of the research team;
  • curriculum vitae of the principle investigator with a list of his publications over the past five years;
  • working schedule, detailed budget request and its brief justification, as well as an indication of other funding available for the project of this scientific group.

The application must demonstrate that the proposed project is aimed at studying a specific scientific issue that is significant for the Programme.

Application submission deadline: 30 September 2021.

Announcement of the results: before 31 December 2021.

Financing start date: 1 January 2022.

The annual reports by research teams should contain:

  • detailed description of the results obtained;
  • financial report.

In case of non-fulfillment of obligations stated in the application for funding, the Committee has a right to terminate the financing for the team.
