Subject Fields: Nuclear and related techniques for the environmental studies of different ecosystems: air, water, and soil pollution; water purification technology; radioecology; radiogenetics; nuclear medicine: radioisotopes and hadron therapy; nuclear detectors in medicine.
Scientific Scope of the School
The School is dedicated to the comprehensive education of nuclear methods in environmental studies and in bio-medical research and applications. The School will be organized as a series of several courses on the above-mentioned topics. Each course will start with an elementary introduction to the subject and its development up to the present day status of research in the corresponding field, explaining the possibilities to participate in related scientific activities in JINR laboratories and partner institutions of JINR associated and member states.
Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) is a large International Intergovernmental scientific organization known all around the world for its outstanding contributions to fundamental physics. A significant complex of basic facilities, such as research reactor and accelerators, allows JINR to perform applied research and take part in environmental and life sciences projects.
The environmental sciences part of the course will be concentrated on the Neutron Activation Analysis Methods performed, in particular, at the research reactor IBR-2 of FLNP (Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics), JINR, such as:
· assessment of environmental situation in the coastal areas;
· atmospheric deposition of heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, radionuclides and cosmic dust in European and Asian countries;
· environmental studies of soil and bottom sediments of the Danube Delta and the Nile River basin;
· geochronology and retrospective study of pollution of oxygenated and anoxic sea water layers.
The life sciences part of the courses will include lectures on:
· radiopharmaceuticals production and nuclear medicine diagnostic and therapy;
· hadron therapy of tumors and other applications of accelerators in medicine and life sciences;
· modern radiation imaging detectors for PET and CT.
All lectures will be given by the scientists from JINR and JINR partner organizations.
Working language of the School is English.
Participants of the School, mainly from South-East European countries, will be selected on a competitive basis. Participation in the School is possible by invitation from the Organizing Committee only.
